Yardage Design is an independent design business specialising in orginal textiles designed and handprinted by Nicole James in Brisbane, Australia.

Yardage Design was established in 2009 and produces a small range of handprinted  homewares, including market bags and linen tea towels.

Nicole was raised on a classic Australian outback sheep station, and has been sewing since she was a school girl studying via ‘School of the Air’. Nicole was strongly influenced initially by her mother who was always sewing clothes for her daughters, or spinning wool grown on the property to be knitted into beautiful jumpers and cardigans. Later, while studying at university, Nicole began sewing clothes under her first label “Dalwood”.  Nicole graduated from university as an environmental scientist and spent many years working in that field before dusting off the sewing machine again after the birth of her first child. Nicole discovered hand screen printing a few years ago, and has been captivated ever since!

Yardage Design was borne out of a passion for simple design, natural fabrics and beautiful homewares. While designing and printing "yardage" (fabric by the metre) was the initial goal, the business has evolved to include handprinted tea towels and bags.

Nicole’s designs are inspired by shapes, pattern and typography seen in travels abroad and in everyday life. Simplicity and colour guide most design decisions in the Yardage Design studio.

Reflecting Nicole’s professional background and beliefs, all Yardage Design products are hand screen-printed using water-based inks onto natural fibre base cloths (organic cotton, linen, hemp).
